Author Marianne Faulkner penned a fabulous piece explaining about the differences between various types of corset boning. In the lingerie world, there’s an ongoing argument over whether to choose flat steel boning or spirals.<\/p>\n

According to The Lingerie Addict, “Flat steel boning is made of strips of spring steel sheets, carefully blunted on its sharp edges and coated with a rust protectant. Spiral steels take the form of a flattened coil, carefully capped, and are noted for their greater mobility.”<\/p>\n

The author makes a note that there aren’t many major differences between the two, but it depends on what type of corset you prefer and the occasion it is needed for. For example, corset boning depends on the actual pattern for the corset, so it can vary by design.<\/p>\n

She elaborates by stating that lacing bones have a stiff quality about them, and they include holes that are designed for grommets. Depending on the person’s shape, it could create discomfort, particularly in the back.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>In contrast, spiral boning is used for a curved line, and also depends on the design of the corest. For instance, “Any bone channel that is curved on a style line (rather than tracing a straight line down a curved form) will certainly require a spiral steel bone.”<\/p>\n

For curvy girls or plus sized figures, things can get a little bit more complicated. Depending on personal experiences, some women feel that flat steel boning is too uncomfortable, and has a nasty tendency to dig into the skin, whereas spiral steels do not offer enough support. <\/span><\/p>\n

One thing to keep in mind, spiral steel corsets are generally recommended. However, depending on the person’s frame, spiral steels could cause bruising along the ribcage, so be forewarned. A good quality design including flat steels should easily reflect the person’s natural curves. <\/span><\/p>\n

For artists, dancers and performers, spiral steel corsets are generally the most common choice, given that they have more mobility than other choices.
