Game of Thrones Season 5 Costumes
With spring here to stay, winter may not be coming, but there’s no shortage of a fresh set of costumes with the latest season of “Game of Thrones”. From faux leather harness tops to chainmail armor and accessories, there is enviable medieval garb for everyone.
With an immaculate attention to detail, Emmy-award winning Michele Carragher continues to weave her magic as Costume Designer for the series. Carragher has been noted for spending over 42 hours on embroidering a single dress for the show. The laborious process of creating detailed costumes is not missed by fans, who often cosplay as their favorite characters to anime and gaming conventions.
From the start of season five of Game of Thrones, many returning characters look fit and ready to rock. Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, looks stunning with a set of gorgeous, detailed robes in layers of billowy fabric. Set in the desert city of Mereen, the costuming takes a new direction fit for the queen mother of dragons.
Along side her loyal friend and translator, Missandei, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, the pair look equally regal and feminine in eye-catching halter dresses. The nobility of Mereen wear soft, fluid robes with circular accessories often made out of wood. Daenerys may struggle with her new responsibilities as a ruler, but she certainly wears her new set of robes like a boss.
Unlike the loose, fluid robes of Mereen, in King’s Landing, the fashion takes after a more aristocratic taste. Women’s fashion features dresses with fitted bodices, painstakingly detailed embroidery and baroque patterning. Cersei Lannister wears form fitting, floor length gowns and keeps her hair in a long style with loose waves. Ladies flaunt their social status with the sigma of their house, such as the Lannister’s lion, emblazoned in their clothing.
Most of the men in Game of Thrones keep things under wraps of leather armor. This season hints at a new development with female warriors from the Southern Isles. In contrast to the gowns worn by the ladies in the North, the people of Dorne reveal a heavy military influence, with leather harnesses and armor infused to their clothing.
Last but not least, the warriors of Game of Thrones don cloaks, heavy leather tunics and layers of armor for protection. As the show continues to move forward at a rapid pace, take a minute to slow down and appreciate the costume artistry of this season’s Game of Thrones.
