DIY vinyl glow skirt

Creative and clever, this clear vinyl skirt has a touch of intergalactic chic. DIY extraordinaire and video blogger known as “coolirpa” posted this awesome tutorial, with all you need to know to create this fun, glow in the dark vinyl skirt. For materials, you’ll need at least 1 yard of vinyl, 2 sheets of glow in the dark duct tape, at least 3 rolls of glow in the dark duct tape and velcro.

  1. First, she began by tracing out a circle skirt pattern onto the fabric. For example, she used about a 3 and 3/4 inch radius measurement for the inner circle.
  2. Begin by gathering some paper to use for the base pattern. Fold the paper in half and draw the pattern at the folded corner.
  3. Next, lay the pattern flat onto the clear vinyl fabric. Use a series of weighted items to hold the pattern securely onto the fabric, and then begin to cut it out slowly.
  4. Try it on and double check to see if you have to do any additional alterations.
  5. Attach the velcro. You have a choice of either sewing or gluing the velcro in place. In this tutorial, she chose to add glow in the dark duct tape for added flair. If you’d like, you can even use glow in the dark paint for even more customization options.
  6. When using the duct tape around a curve, you can cut it carefully and re-apply more tape.

The final product is totally out of this world! Pair with a cute blouse, leggings and sneakers for a vibrant look. Make sure to browse through our colorful assortment of vinyl fabric options and let the crafting commence.

Using clear vinyl with glow in the dark tape is such a cool contrast, and I appreciate that she mentioned both sewing and gluing velcro since not everyone has a machine.

The part about cutting glow duct tape to fit curves was especially helpful because that’s always where my projects look messy, so seeing that workaround makes me want to try this.

The suggestion to test fit and adjust before attaching the velcro is something I usually skip and regret, so it’s good to see it emphasized here.

Pairing the finished skirt with leggings and sneakers makes it feel wearable instead of just costume-y, especially with the glow accents kept as trim instead of full coverage.

Casey Rowan

Adding optional glow paint on top of the duct tape opens up a lot of customization, and I like that she didn’t lock the design into just one finished look.

Sage Bennett

I liked how she used a 3 3/4 inch radius for the waist opening since that makes the circle skirt math less intimidating, and the tip about weighing down the vinyl before cutting is really practical.

Drew Collins

I didn’t realize you could build the pattern just by folding paper and drawing from the corner, which makes this feel way more approachable for beginners like me.
