Met Gala Latex

beyone-wearing-latex-dress-at-met-galaBeyonce and sister Solange Knowles took to the red carpet in stunning latex looks for the annual Met Gala, while rising model Bella Hadid sported a sultry latex dress while heading to an afterparty. London-based latex extraordinaire, Atsuko Kudo, worked with Riccardo Tisci from Givenchy to create the flesh colored gown for Beyonce.

Queen Bey looked breathtaking in the peach hued number, complete with puffed sleeves and subtle pearl embellishments. “You’d think latex is easy to fit, but it’s difficult because everyone is a different height and shape and we make it to precisely fit the shape,” the Japanese designer explained to the Telegraph. “If we get the measurements right, latex will make you look amazing and works like shapewear.

I don’t want people to think latex is not flattering – it just has to be the correct size, because some people just go to any shop and try on and it’s not the correct size so you don’t get the right result. A good fit of latex can empower women.” Beyonce loves wearing Givenchy creations for the annual ball, having exclusively worn gowns from the fashion house for the last five years.

“Beyoncé’s dress for the Met Ball was another significant step forward for latex as a fashion fabric,” said Kudo to the Telegraph. “When a couture brand like Givenchy chooses latex to create a main garment for an important client who happens to be a super-star like Beyoncé then it’s a big change. My mission is to empower women through latex, and make the world a shinier place.”

It certainly looks like Kudo is well on her way, especially with other celebs like Solange Knowles and Bella Hadid also wearing irresistible latex outfits. Solange looked sunny in an all yellow abstract design with rows of pleats and a three dimensional shape. Beneath it all, she sported a pair of matching latex thigh highs. Meanwhile, Bella Hadid smoldered with an Atsuko Kudo pencil dress, featuring a demi-boosted bodice and matching pumps. She let her hair loose in a carefree nineties-inspired style and looked ready to party.

The detail about latex acting like shapewear really stood out to me, especially seeing how smooth and structured Bella Hadid’s pencil dress looked at the afterparty.

The pearl embellishments on Beyoncé’s gown are a detail I wish more articles highlighted, because mixing something delicate with latex gives it a totally different vibe.

Solange’s yellow abstract look with pleats and those latex thigh highs sounded so bold and architectural, definitely not the typical image people have of latex clothing.

Kudo’s point about people trying ill-fitting latex and getting the wrong impression feels spot on; good fit clearly makes all the difference based on these red carpet looks.

That comment about couture houses like Givenchy embracing latex being a ‘big change’ makes me wonder if we’ll start seeing it more regularly in high fashion collections.

Bella’s nineties-inspired hair paired with the demi-boosted latex dress was a nice contrast, making the whole outfit feel less stiff and more wearable for a party setting.

Rowan Pierce

I like how the article emphasizes empowerment through proper fit rather than just calling latex sexy; it reframes the material as something tailored and intentional.

Morgan Ellis

Seeing multiple celebrities like Beyoncé, Solange, and Bella all wearing latex in different ways really shows how versatile the material has become beyond niche fashion.

Robin Tate

I didn’t realize how technical latex fitting is until that quote from Atsuko Kudo about precise measurements; it makes sense why Beyoncé’s peach Givenchy gown looked so sculpted and flawless.

Finley Hart

It’s interesting that Beyoncé has stuck with Givenchy for five years at the Met Gala, and choosing latex this time really does feel like a shift toward more experimental couture materials.
