History of spikes and studs

Spikes and studs have been an enduring trend that have appeared across the world. From top designer runway collections to street style snaps, the subtle yet cool accents are all over the globe. Let’s take a closer look at these small additions that make a bold impact on our wardrobe.

Did you know that spikes originally derived from armored pieces worn during medieval times? Warriors would wear leather armor featuring smaller plates that were adhered together with studs. A modern day take on the trend would be studded accessories found on handbags or even spiked accents on denim clothes.

Spikes also share a few things in common with the history of studs. For example, tough looking collars with spikes were attached to dogs who were used to hunt large animals. The spiked collar would provide protection to the dog and also make the dog appear more threatening to other animals.

Also, spikes were commonly found adorned to weapons, like a deadly mace and of course, on the end of spear. Punk subculture embraced the dangerous trend, taking a do it yourself approach and adhering rows of pyramid studs onto clothes, backpacks and accessories.

The cone studs or spikes were often a symbol of toughness. Today, a spiked collar looks on-trend, but it formerly represented non-conformity and rejecting the trends of the mainstream. In modern day, spikes and studs are also popularly used with shoes. We love seeing creative combinations of studs and spikes, especially with boots and flirty heels. For a rebellious edge, try adding spikes and studs to your wardrobe.

The connection between spiked dog collars used for hunting and today’s fashion pieces was fascinating, especially how something meant for protection turned into a style statement.

I liked the point about combining studs with feminine pieces like flirty heels, since it shows how the trend evolved from purely tough symbolism into more mixed, expressive styling.

It’s interesting how punk culture DIYed pyramid studs onto jackets and backpacks to signal nonconformity, which contrasts a lot with how polished and mainstream studded pieces feel now.

I didn’t realize studs came from medieval armor construction, that detail about small plates being fastened together really reframes how functional they originally were before becoming decorative.

The mention of weapons like maces and spears having spikes adds a darker historical layer that makes modern studded heels and boots feel almost ironic.
