DIY leather sleeves for jacket

Lucero Tapia, also known as Lucykiins, is a fun DIY blogger who shares videos on YouTube. We love her simple and easy do it yourself tutorial to create your own denim jacket with leather sleeves. First, she got things started by using a thrifted denim vest and supplied the leather material by using the sleeves from leather jacket. If you’d rather purchase your own leather material, that’s totally fine too! Other materials you’ll need include fabric scissors, yellow thread and sewing machine, and some pins.

  1. Start by taking your leather jacket and cut the sleeves about 1 inch from the seam.
  2. Pin the lining on the inside to keep both sides in place.
  3. Sew into place, and don’t worry about it being neat, this part won’t be seen.
  4. Take the sleeves and match the shoulder seam on the sleeve to the shoulder part of the vest. Also match the armhole part to the sleeve.
  5. Pin in place and work slowly to avoid causing any holes in the fabric.
  6. Sew into place using your sewing machine and cut any loose threads to avoid snagging. If it seems a little insecure, you can sew over one more time.

If you’d like to add other accents, like leather pockets, grab your leather fabric and cut a small rectangle. Measure the length and width of your front pocket, along with the length down the middle.

For example, her measurements were four inches. Then, draw a square on the fabric to the measurements using a wax pen and a ruler. Make sure to add at least half an inch seam allowance for the pocket.
Pin into place and then cut out the square. Now you’ll have two pieces of the leather fabric for your pocket. Remove the pins and then fold the pocket fabric in half.
Then cut a small diagonal angle to give the pocket the pointed look. Sew together with your sewing machine, and then cut off the bottom corners in order to give the pocket a nice shape.
Flip the pocket inside out and you’ll be ready to attach it to the jacket. Place it right over top the pocket onto the denim vest. Mark where it meets the denim pocket, and then make a small slit to allow the button to secure into place. Attach the button to the pocket and secure into place with more pins.

For the last step, sew it in place with your sewing machine. The finished product looks totally rad and it’s a great way to give your wardrobe an updated look. Freshen up your look for fall with a denim jacket with leather sleeves like Lucero.

Using yellow thread stood out to me because it gives that classic denim jacket contrast, even when you’re mixing in leather sleeves.

The advice to sew over the sleeve seam again if it feels insecure is reassuring, especially since leather can be tricky to work with.

Blair Sutton

I appreciate that she said not to worry about messy stitching on the inside, since that’s usually what discourages beginners from trying projects like this.

Working slowly to avoid holes in the fabric is such a key point, especially because leather doesn’t forgive mistakes the way denim sometimes does.

Cutting the bottom corners off the pocket before flipping it inside out is a small detail, but it really helps the final shape look cleaner.

The wax pen and ruler for marking the pocket dimensions is a good reminder to measure carefully rather than eyeballing it.

Kendall Reese

Matching the shoulder seam and armhole carefully makes sense, and the reminder to sew slowly to avoid holes in leather is something I definitely needed to hear.

Parker Jules

I like how she reused sleeves from an old leather jacket instead of buying new material, it makes the project feel more accessible and sustainable while still looking really polished.

Hayden Sloane

The whole process of attaching the sleeves to a vest instead of altering a full jacket makes this feel like a manageable weekend project.

Reese Palmer

It’s cool that she started with a thrifted denim vest, because it makes the whole project feel more customizable than working with a full jacket.

Kendall Reese

The optional leather pocket addition is a nice touch, especially with the diagonal cut to create that pointed shape, which adds a bit of style without being complicated.

Marlowe Dean

It’s nice that she mentioned you can buy leather fabric if you don’t have an old jacket, so the project works for different starting points.

Riley Harper

I like that she suggested adding at least a half inch seam allowance for the pocket, since that’s easy to forget when cutting leather.

Jamie Brooks

I didn’t realize you could just pin the lining inside the sleeve to keep it in place before sewing, that simplifies things more than expected.

Taylor Quinn

The tip about cutting the leather sleeves an inch from the seam was helpful, since I always worry about ruining pieces when deconstructing garments like that.

Logan Wren

That step about adding a slit for the button on the leather pocket was clever, I wouldn’t have thought about how to integrate it with the existing denim pocket.

Robin Tate

The final result sounds like a great fall piece, and mixing denim with leather sleeves really gives it that updated, edgy look without being over the top.
