What a better way to embrace the new season than by trying out a simple DIY project to create a leather leaf necklace. Do It Yourself DIY created an easy to follow video to create a necklace of your own. First, opt for three colors you’d like to wear. In this video, she selected black, red and a light brown.
- First, get some paper, leather cords, metal rings, leather fabric of three different colors.
- Draw a leaf outline on the paper and cut it out with regular paper scissors.
- Trace the stencil directly onto the leather and cut it out.
- Repeat this step carefully on the different colored leather fabric.
- Open a ring using a pair of pliers, and pierced the ring through the leather to attach it to the leaf. Close the ring, and repeat this step for each leaf design. You’ll need to create about four to seven leaves of each color for this project.
- Next, you’ll create the necklace. Thread a cord through the rings, and make sure to put the leaf on the same color cord.
- When you’re finished, twist the cords together to form a rope shape, and then tie a knot to secure.
- Repeat on the other side and then you’ve got it made! If there is a gap, add a few other leaves.
- For the last part, arrange the leaves together and hot glue them together in place.
- Then, you’ll want to tie the ends of each cord and secure. You can also create decorative knots for an added twist.
Of course, you could also create your own unique variation to this do it yourself project. Opt for contrasting colors, with gold, brown and red, just like the beautiful fall foliage outside. Or, go for a unique look by re-creating different shaped leaves.
You could even add extra accents like beads, studs or spikes for an alternative approach. For another version, create a single strand necklace using different colored leaves and you’ll be able to bring a beautiful sense of autumn with you, wherever you go.

Using pliers to open the metal rings and pierce the leather seems simple, but that detail is exactly what makes the leaves actually functional as jewelry pieces.
Trying different leaf shapes instead of just one outline sounds like a fun way to personalize this, especially if you want something less uniform.
Adding beads or even spikes for an alternative style is a cool twist, it shows how this can go beyond just a soft autumn aesthetic.
I appreciate the suggestion to add extra leaves if there’s a gap, since spacing can make or break the overall look of something like this.
The option to hot glue the leaves together at the end surprised me, but it makes sense for keeping everything in place once you’ve arranged them.
Making a single strand version with different colored leaves sounds like a simpler alternative if you don’t want the fuller twisted rope style.
The idea of matching each leaf to the same color cord is a nice detail that probably keeps the design from looking too chaotic.
Twisting the cords together into a rope shape is a clever finishing touch, it probably gives the necklace a more polished and sturdy look.
I like how the tutorial breaks down the process from drawing a paper stencil to tracing onto leather, it makes the whole project feel less intimidating for beginners like me.
This feels like a great seasonal project because it really leans into fall colors and textures without being overly complicated or time consuming.
The tip about making four to seven leaves of each color is helpful because I wouldn’t have known how full to make the necklace otherwise.
Choosing three colors like black, red, and light brown really captures that fall vibe, but I’m tempted to try gold accents like suggested for a slightly dressier look.
I like that the project only requires basic materials like leather scraps, rings, and cord, which makes it accessible without special tools.
