Latex Designer Review: Dawnamatrix

This season, it’s time to create an unforgettable look with a serious sense of edge. For years, latex fashion has been growing in popularity, with everyone from cosplay models to celebrities sporting the fabric. Get some serious fashion inspiration from Dawn Mostow, creator of latex fashion label, Dawnamatrix. Mostow, who is a Harvard grad, has been creating hand-made costumes for years. With her unique aesthetic and sleek style, requests for her custom made pieces have been coveted all across the world.

In an interview with Billboard, Mostow explains some of the inspiration surrounding latex looks. “The collections of Vivienne Westwood in the 70’s or Michelle Pfieffer wearing the “Catwoman” catsuit in Batman Returns (1992) come to mind,” Dawn said. “Latex has been mainstream for a while now–think Madonna’s “Human Nature” music video (1995) and more recently, the emergence of Lady Gaga–and we’ve reached a level of comfort with the material that sees it incorporated into daily fashion.”

Mostow has created stunning latex looks for a wide variety of celebrities, including a flirty babydoll dress for a CoverGirl commercial starring Katy Perry to sleek pencil skirts for Vogue. According to the interview, Dawn first started experimenting with latex back in 2009. Inspired by Japan, Dawn eventually branched out into creating her own latex business under the name Dawnamatrix. Some of the most popular items include gloves, bodysuits or catsuits and dresses. Mostow feels as though latex has become more mainstream because of popular culture, like comic book movies, music videos and runway collections incorporating latex.

Interested in trying out a latex look of your own? Here are some thoughts from the designer herself. “Latex separates are a great way of incorporating some eye-catching interest into your look, and depending on the fit of the garment and personal preference, latex can be quite comfortable. Leggings, skirts, or even a latex bowtie or collar are a fun way to mix-and-match into your wardrobe.” Most recently, Dawnamatrix has collaborated with Nicki Minaj to create a customized look. With stunning, eye-catching designs, Dawnamatrix offers some seriously fierce latex fashion inspiration.
