Latex moving from the bedroom to mainstream
Known for being on the most cutting edge of fashion, latex is usually associated with the underground fetish subculture and certainly not the mainstream. Things have changed these days, with everyone from A-list celebs and pop singers wearing latex, to appearing in haute couture designs.
Independent designer Vital Vein Fashion on Etsy, has crafted a series of fresh and modern latex creations. Paying homage to 1940’s glamour, a gathered latex halter top tucked into a skin-tight pencil skirt creates a seriously sophisticated look.
Others, like Joy Williams, have revamped latex designs into unique, handpainted creations. With zig zag patterning and geometric symbols, the results of these latex dresses are nothing short of fabulous.
Pivotal to understanding how this fabric continues to defy boundaries includes the work of couture designer Atsuko Kudo. Using latex as a key fabric for many of their collections, Atsuko Kudo has elevated latex into its place within the mainstream. Designed for the strong, feminine and inherently beautiful women, these latex creations are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.
Featuring floor-length gowns, ultra sleek catsuits and voluminous peplum skirts, Atsuko Kudo designs with their unexpected use of latex is creative and fresh. With a heavy emphasis on the theme of “dark glamour” Atsuko Kudo’s work is definitely worth perusing to better appreciate the incredible detail.
High end designers, such as Celine, have created their posh interpretation of the trend, featuring a latex mini dress layered over a prim collared blouse. Jennifer Lopez’s latest album cover, entitled “A.K.A.” features the diva in an edgy harness dress designed by Versace.
Never one to shy away from showing a little skin, the vinyl halter is bold and sexy, with luxe accents like gold lions and tight belt buckles. Other popular singers, such as Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj are notorious for their latex costumes in performances or attending award shows.
