Mom tries out latex fashions

mom-wears-latex-dressIf the ever-infamous “Mom jeans” are the only thing that comes to mind when considering maternal fashion, think again. Latex has been popping up everywhere these days, and now from the runway to the driveway, when one brave mother tries out a few drool-worthy latex dresses of her own.

Celebrities, singers and models, from the likes of Kim Kardashian to Kate Moss, have been snapped in some seriously fierce latex outfits lately. For others, going from jeans and a t-shirt to a form fitting, Grammy Awards mini dress can be terrifying. Lets see how 42-year-old mother of three, Annabel Cole of the Daily Mail, faired.

Cole soon realized there are certain precautions to take before taking the plunge into that sassy latex frock. For one, all sharp jewelry must be removed, to avoid ripping the delicate material. Another tip, generously sprinkling talc or latex shine inside of the garment acts as a dressing aid to glide into your rubber gear.

First, Cole tried on a silver blue colored dress from boutique Breathless. With a strong Eighties influence, the halter style, curve-skimming dress definitely took things up a notch and looks party-ready. Although Cole felt a little out of her element, when it comes to fashion, it’s always a good thing to mix things up every now and then.

Another choice was a black dress featuring a bow at the chest designed by stage-wear costume designer William Wilde. Visually, the over-sized bow adds a touch of femininity and interest, and makes this dress stand out from other latex body-con dresses.

Cole felt it was too revealing and the shiny, reflective material was a little too flashy, making her feel self-conscious. William Wilde is known for designing stage-wear for singer Kylie Minogue, who boldly wears latex without batting a lash.

The next step was a bright red dress from Kim West, which Cole favored out of all the others. The high neck collar and three-quarter arm sleeves, in combination with the fitted PVC work to create a chic, Mad Men-worthy hourglass silhouette. Another plus, Cole felt that it magically sucked in her excess midriff, eliminating the need for another layer like Spanx.

Going for a sophisticated vibe, another look featured a white latex halter top with gold chain accents and a black pencil skirt. Unlike the dresses, the wet-look fabric featured lining which allowed an easier changing process.

Cole noted with humor, because of the slick material, it’s wipe-clean which makes it perfect for on-the-go mom’s. The final choice was a sleeveless dress from Kim West. Cole felt it was the tightest fit out of all the dresses, and felt a little more than uncomfortable to say the least. Kudos for trying out something new and experimenting with your fashion, Annabel Cole!

Interesting that she said the latex acted almost like built-in shapewear by smoothing the midriff, which makes sense given how tight the material is.

I like that the article didn’t pretend everything was glamorous, especially when she admitted feeling self-conscious in the shiny black bow dress.

The note about using latex shine or talc to get into the dress made me realize how much effort goes into wearing these looks compared to regular clothes.

That contrast between stage-wear designers like William Wilde and everyday wear really stood out, since what works for Kylie Minogue doesn’t always translate offstage.

Her experience made latex feel less like a celebrity-only trend and more like something that can be experimented with, even if it’s not for everyday wear.

It’s refreshing that she acknowledged feeling out of her comfort zone while still trying multiple looks instead of stopping after the first awkward experience.

The wipe-clean comment made me laugh, but it’s actually a practical perk for busy parents dealing with spills and messes.

The comparison from mom jeans to a Grammy-style latex mini really highlights how intimidating that jump is, especially for someone not used to body-hugging materials.

I liked how Annabel mentioned removing sharp jewelry before dressing, because that’s something you’d never think about until you ruin a pricey piece. The talc trick was also surprisingly practical.

Her discomfort with the sleeveless Kim West piece came through clearly, and it’s a good reminder that not every latex garment will feel wearable day-to-day.

The Breathless silver blue halter dress with that Eighties influence sounded fun, even if she felt a bit out of her element wearing something so bold.

The detail about the reflective material being too flashy is relatable, because latex naturally draws attention even without bold designs.

I appreciated the inclusion of the lined halter top and pencil skirt outfit, since it showed a more approachable way to wear latex without struggling to get dressed.

That red Kim West dress sounds like a winner, especially with the high neck and sleeves giving it a more structured, Mad Men vibe instead of clubwear.

The article did a good job highlighting both the appeal and the limitations of latex, especially for someone transitioning from casual mom outfits.

Her favorite being the red dress makes sense since it balanced coverage and shape, rather than going fully revealing or overly flashy.

The mix of dresses and separates helped show that latex isn’t just about one extreme look but can be styled in slightly more subtle ways.

Her reaction to the William Wilde bow dress felt honest, since that oversized bow sounded striking but also like it would draw a lot of attention in real life.

I hadn’t considered how much preparation goes into wearing latex until reading about the talc and careful handling to avoid tearing.
