Latex Repair Tutorial
If you’ve ever encountered a little wardrobe malfunction while wearing latex, this YouTube tutorial from Latex Jim is bound to be a life saver. Jim points out that latex garments with tiny holes in it could lead to a disaster when out and about. Latex fabric is so pliable, that with a tiny bit of pressure, it could split and result in a hot mess.
Latex Jim offers 6 helpful ways to repair latex fabric, through Patches or Appliques, Designs, Inside Patches, Keyholes, Alterations (Adding) or Trimming. For an easy and effortless Do It Yourself project, you can try adding an applique or designer patch on the inside. In the tutorial, he used a bright red lightning bolt applique. If you want to apply it on the inside of the fabric, first, you have to cut a shape. For example, Jim cut out a shape like a circle, called a keyhole. He emphasized how important it is to reinforce it, because leaving it by itself could result in damage.
Another method to try out, is to first apply the applique and then create your keyhole shape. It’s an easy method to cover up something that may be problematic in the future.
Once all the repairs are complete, it’s time to set off to the next stage. Perhaps your latex outfit doesn’t have the perfect fit. Or, you may have a little bit of a problem down the seam line, or others may want to reshape something they bought.
One method is to unpeel the seam line, which you should do very carefully. Don’t pull it from a great distance, it’s important to keep your fingers close to the seam line. You might have to even use a thinner piece of cloth to really keep loosening the seam, especially if it is an older garment.
In this example, he separated the pieces into two panels, and he mentioned how you could trim one panel or use glue to make it shorter. Another method is to add another color, like a blue panel, and attach it with glue. After attaching the pieces and re-seaming it, he used a quick rundown with a paint roller. In a shocking display, he stretched it widely and it did not tear at all.
Whether your wardrobe is in dire need of repairs, alterations or just a little DIY love, the possibilities are literally endless with these latex repair techniques!
