DIY leather cat ears

cat-ear-headband-diy-tutorialIt’s officially the last week before Halloween! While this might be a source of joy or dread for some, it’s not too late to get together a fresh outfit for the festivities. Simple and totally easy to create, a leather headband with cat ears is just the right choice.

Maegan Tintari of …loveMaegan.com crafted a super easy to follow DIY Leather Cat Ears Headband tutorial. All you’ll need in the way of materials is black leather, pinking shears, a revolving leather hole punch, a stretchy headband comb and needle and thread.

First, cut out the cat ears from the leather fabric, about 2.5″ wide by 2.5″ tall at the point. Next, sew a few stitches through the bottom to create a three dimensional shape, and secure them with a knot. Using the leather hole punch, space out four holes along the bottom of each. Then, try on the headband and decide where your ears will be attached. Put the spikes of the headband through the bottom holes of the ears, and you’re finished! We told you it was going to be super easy. Now, get ready to pair them with a catsuit for a meow-valous look!

If you’re really crunched for time, check out Gina Michele’s DIY Leather Halloween Cat Ears tutorial. When we say it’s easy, we’re not kidding. She only used four materials, a headband, one pipe cleaner, some glue and leather fabric, but the results are fabulous.

  1. First, she took the pipe cleaner and cut it in half.
  2. Next, she attached the pipe cleaners to the headband and formed triangular shapes for the cat ears.
  3. After that, she glued the leather fabric on each ear.
  4. While you wait for it to dry, take this as a perfect opportunity to get together your final outfit.
  5. After everything has dried, trim the leather so it creates a triangular shape around the pipe cleaners.
  6. Cut out more leather fabric for the back part of the ears, and glue in place.

You’re all set! Pair with a two piece crop top and skater skirt set for a flirty combo. I like how Maegan’s version uses the headband comb spikes through the four punched holes, it seems sturdier than just glue. The 2.5 inch sizing tip also helps avoid making them too oversized.

The suggestion to pair these with a crop top and skater skirt is cute, but I’m more tempted to go full catsuit like you mentioned. Either way, this feels super doable even mid-week.

Attaching the ears by threading them onto the comb instead of sewing them directly is a clever shortcut. It makes the whole project feel approachable even if you don’t have advanced crafting skills.

The pipe cleaner method from Gina Michele is genius for last minute costumes, especially since it only needs four materials. I wouldn’t have thought to build the structure first and then wrap it with leather.

Good reminder that pinking shears can give the edges a cleaner look on leather pieces like this. The small stitched pinch at the base really makes the ears look more dimensional.

Interesting that you can swap out basic black for gunmetal or red leather to change the vibe. I could see a darker metallic pair working really well for a less traditional Halloween look.

I tried a similar DIY before but didn’t use a revolving leather hole punch, and it showed. Spacing out four holes along the bottom seems like a small detail that probably makes a big difference.
