Fashion Student Uses Latex and Lace

latex-and-lace-ball-gown-5Sara Linke, a recent fashion design graduate, has created a bold and innovative collection using latex and lace. Sara studied fashion at the Faculty of Applied Arts, Schneeburg, at the West Saxony University of Applied Sciences, Zwickau, and envisioned a collection of modern outerwear for her fashion collection.

Taking a fresh approach, Linke decided to use unconventional means by using lated and lace materials. Gabriela Schellner, the Head of Textile Development at Karl Mayer, and her team lent Sara the needed lace fabric for her project.

We’ve seen lace and latex separately, but when combined together, they create a fresh effect that’s full of energy. For example, Sara used different techniques to achieve interesting new variations. “Lace is seen as something innocent and playful, whereas latex is slightly edgy and unfamiliar.

However, the two materials are similar in some respects – for example, they are both seductive,” Sara said about her collection. When a traditional fabric, like lace, meets a fabric that’s in-the-now, like latex, the results can be very intriguing. We’re bound to hear more about this rising fashion designer in the years to come.

It’s interesting that she focused on outerwear rather than lingerie, because mixing those textures in coats or jackets shifts the whole perception of both materials.

The mention of different techniques to create variations makes me wish there were more details, since that’s likely where the real innovation in her collection sits.

Combining lace and latex sounds risky, but the way the article describes their shared “seductive” quality makes the pairing feel more intentional than just shock value.

I appreciate how she didn’t treat lace as purely delicate, instead reframing it alongside latex as something equally bold and contemporary.

The collaboration with Gabriela Schellner and Karl Mayer stood out to me, since having access to specialized lace probably made those experimental techniques much more achievable.

There’s something compelling about taking a familiar fabric like lace and pairing it with something still seen as niche, creating that energetic tension the article describes.

Seeing a graduate from West Saxony University push materials this far suggests the program encourages experimentation rather than sticking to safe textile combinations.

I like how Sara Linke leaned into the contrast between innocent lace and edgy latex, especially for outerwear, which isn’t where you usually see either material pushed this way.
