DIY Spiked Garter

Invite a little color into your wardrobe with this cute Pastel Studded Garter DIY, created by Tiffyquake. Also known as Cupquake, Tiffany is a Cal State Long Beach grad with a BFA in Illustration. Although this tutorial is one of her older ones, it’s definitely an awesome choice. Make sure to follow her latest cosplay creations over at iHasCupquake.

  1. First, get your materials together, which includes pastel elastic garters, scissors, key heart rings, studs, hose grips and a needle and thread.
  2. For this tutorial, she used three different colors of elastic to achieve a gradient effect. You could also opt for a single color design if you want!
  3. Measure the width of your thigh, and cut out the elastic to fit.
  4. Grab your heart key ring, wrap elastic around either sides, and sew in place.
  5. After repeating that process for both straps, then you’ll want to attach the vertical elastic bands. Make sure to place your hose grips at the end of these straps.
  6. Then, you’ll want to sew the straps together and make sure everything is in place.
  7. For added flair, try adding studs or spikes to your garter. Tiff used a series of silver studs to match her heart key ring, but you could also use spikes or a combination of spikes and studs together for an edge look.
The final product looks totally on point! We love the look, especially when paired with a matching lavender colored skirt and over the knee socks.
If you need more style ideas, get inspired by Japanese street fashion and the colorful fashionistas of Harajuku. Or, you could look for more ideas by searching for pastel grunge styles on tumblr or Pinterest. Go for a look that’s sweet with a hint of an edge by creating a pair of pastel garters with studs or spikes.

Using a heart key ring as the center detail is such a cute touch, especially paired with the silver studs to keep everything visually cohesive.

Morgan Ellis

The step where you wrap the elastic around the heart ring and sew it in place seems like the trickiest part, but it’s explained clearly enough to follow.

Parker Jules

I like how she used three different pastel elastics for that gradient effect; it makes the garter feel more custom instead of just a single strip of color.

Referencing Harajuku and pastel grunge styles gives good direction for styling, especially if you’re not sure how to incorporate something like this into an outfit.

Jordan Blake

Her suggestion to pair it with a lavender skirt and over-the-knee socks really completes the look and makes the DIY feel wearable, not just a craft project.

Riley Harper

The option to switch between studs and spikes depending on the vibe is nice, since pastel grunge can lean either soft or more edgy.

Logan Wren

The tip about measuring your thigh before cutting the elastic seems obvious, but it probably saves a lot of frustration when you’re sewing everything together.

Harper Sloan

It’s cool that this is one of her older tutorials but still feels relevant, especially with how popular pastel and studded accessories still are.

Jordan Blake

I appreciate that she mentioned you can just use one color elastic if you want something simpler, since not everyone wants the full gradient effect.

Blair Sutton

I didn’t realize hose grips were part of garter construction, so that detail about placing them at the end of the vertical straps was actually really helpful.

Cameron Vale

Adding both spikes and studs together sounds like a fun way to customize it further, especially if you want something that stands out more than just silver studs.
