How to sew short leather skirt
In need of a quick way to spruce up your wardrobe this season? Start with the basics from a YouTube fashion guru known as Creative Genie. Follow along for an easy to follow DIY tutorial on how to create your very own vinyl leather skirt.
For this project, she used approximately 50 cm of stretch vinyl leather and 20 cm of spandex. Once you have the fabric, you’ll need to record your waist measurements. For this tutorial, she decided to measure about one quarter of her waist measurements to create a pattern for the skirt.
- To begin, she started by measuring about 23 cm from the top line to the hips line. To ensure an accurate fit, she added about 2 cm on the 1/4 hips measurements.
- Next, connect two dots between the hips point and the side point.
- Then, use a straight edge tool to create a right angle on the outer edge. Measure 4 cm and then connect the points to the lower line.
- Measure the skrit length from theskirt line. For her skirt, she decided to measure her skirt about 13 cm above the knee. However, the beauty of doing a DIY project is that you’re in control of the final design.
- Make sure to measure approximately how long you’d like your skirt to be, and then proceed to the next step.
- After this, you’ll need to cut about 8 cm from the skirt length, so you can add 8 cm of spandex as the waistband for the top of the skirt.
- Create a dotted line and then fill in the solid line to create the final pattern shape.
- Then, you’ll need to cut out your pattern to continue.
- Grab your fabric, and then fold it into four layers. Pin the pattern into place, and give yourself approximately 1 cm extra around the edges for sewing.
- Next up, fold the fabric in two and then cut off approximately 10 cm from the waist measurements. You’ll also need to measure about 9 cm for the waistband width.
- To create a polished hemline, cut a strip of fabric that’s about 2 cm wide. Now, you’ll begin sewing each piece, starting with the waistband part.
- After the waistband is closed on one side, you can sew both layers, and then you’ll be able to attach it to the skirt.
- Sew both sides of the skirt.
- To attach the waistband, make a small notch on the waistband to connect the band to the skirt’s upper seam.
- After you sew those two pieces together, you’ll just need to work on the hem of the skirt next. Be sure to follow along on her YouTube video for detailed instructions.
