New York Comic Con is October 8–11. That is thirty days from this morning, which is either a perfectly reasonable sewing window or a dare, depending on whether the cloth is already on the table. Rose City Comic Con is this weekend in Portland — September 11–13. If you are already packed for Oregon, good. Fabric ordered today will not make the Oregon Convention Center. New York still will, if you order this week. Halloween is October 31, and it is sitting behind NYCC like a second deadline that thinks it is being polite.
This is a fabric timeline, not a pep talk. Pick a silhouette that fits the weeks you actually have. Order the cloth. Order the custom-fit pattern the same day. One-size costumes fail at the first fitting, and the Javits lighting is unforgiving about it.
The honest calendar
- This weekend · Rose City Comic Con, Sep 11–13. Portland. Too late to ship fabric. If you are going, pack a repair kit and wear what is already finished.
- This week · order for NYCC. Cloth, swatch if the finish is new to you, pattern. Do not add a second character idea.
- Oct 8–11 · New York Comic Con. Thirty days. Jacket, leggings, a two-piece, a skirt that knows how to sit down. A first catsuit is tight unless you already sew shine.
- Oct 31 · Halloween. Still a sewing window after NYCC, if you keep the second build smaller than the first.
Week by week, if NYCC is the floor
Sep 8–14. Lock the silhouette. Order fabric and the pattern. Digital patterns do not wait on a truck. Printed ones do — order those now, not in week three.
Sep 15–21. Muslin, or a cheap knit mockup. Change the pattern now, not in vinyl. Vinyl does not enjoy being your first draft.
Sep 22–28. Cut the real cloth. Sew the main seams. Leave the zipper until you can try it on without swearing at the clock.
Sep 29–Oct 5. Edges, hardware, shine. Wear it around the house for an hour. Seams that fail on the sofa will not improve on 11th Avenue.
Oct 6–7. Pack. Repairs only. NYCC opens the 8th.
What to order this week
These are the rolls with enough yardage to start now. Several are already on sale. Hot pink stretch PVC, black stretch faux leather, and snakeskin foil are full price; we are not pretending otherwise. A swatch is cheaper than five wrong yards.
- Stretch PVC · Purple — 4-way, on sale. Bodysuits, sleeves, anything that has to sit down and then stand up again.
- Stretch PVC · Sky blue — on sale. Ice, spirit, or the color you picked on purpose.
- Stretch PVC · Hot pink — full price. Photographs like you meant Halloween.
- Faux leather · Stretch black — full price. Jackets and vests. Hides stitching better than metallic.
- Foil spandex · Silver — on sale. Fastest shine if you already sew knits. Under 3 yards for a top plus gloves.
- Foil spandex · Snakeskin — full price. The print is doing the character work. You sew a reasonable block.
- PVC · Baby pink — steep sale. Skirts, panels, gloss without 4-way stretch.
- Snakeskin · Pink — on sale. Accents, a second-skin print over a simple pattern.
Yardage, if you are counting
A 30-day con is a 3-yard con unless you already have a catsuit block you trust. Leggings plus a top stays under 3 yards in 4-way. A jacket is about 2–3 yards of 2-way. A skirt is closer to 2. Skip the cape. The cape is how October becomes a pile of uncut shine.
The pattern is the other clock
Beautiful fabric on a guessed size is how the fitting room wins. If the garment has to fit your body, start from measurements. That is the whole argument in The Biggest Lie About One-Size Costumes, and it has not gotten less true. Custom-fit patterns live on the pattern page. Order them the same day as the cloth.
