dry glue?

I had recently bought some latex and ammonia based latex glue for a recent project. i had never used the ammonia before but i got fed up with my edges curling (which i know is just the way the solvent glue works, just annoys me) and from videos online i thought it was supposed to be kinda milky and thin, but the bottle i received was thick, not chunky just thicker and kind of hard to get a thin layer down. Im wondering if this just how its supposed to be or if i perhaps got a older bottle? im having a really hard time getting it smooth and theres a lot of clumping happening, any advice or info would be greatly appreciated!!! this may just be user error and i just dont know it yet
