Fashion book review

BY admin on July 3, 2013

Summer is heating up and sometimes you have to abandon the sweltering sun and curl up with a good book.  Our staff has put together a great guide to books that you may find useful.  We cover fashion sewing ranging from pattern making to garment construction.  Our top list is as follows:

  1. 9 heads: The first place to start when you have that amazing idea in your head, is with putting it down on paper.  If you ever wanted to learn how to sketch fashion designs, this book will get you started.  This book teaches by example and starts with the human form and then covers drawing garments and accessories as well as the techniques to draw them eloquently and convincingly.
  2. Sewing Patterns: Once your sketches are complete, it’s time to work on drafting a pattern.  This book goes over the basics in an easy to digest format.  It covers how to measure, what to measure, and how to take those measurements and create a pattern from scratch.  We found this book useful, although a bit dated.  If you are new to the concept of pattern making, then this is a must buy.
  3. Power Sewing: The pattern is done and the fabric cut, now it’s time to put it together.  Power sewing is like a personal trainer for your sewing.  Assuming you already know the basics, this book will help you improve your zipper installation, produce nicer hems, and tons of other how-to’s and tips you wouldn’t figure out on your own.
  4. Making latex clothes: Working with latex instead of traditional fabrics?  This book is the only one of it’s kind that we know of.  Covers the basics and can be a good compliment to our online tutorials.
