DIY Leather Holiday Brooch

‘Tis the season for do it yourself projects which are just in time for the holidays. Zoe Larkins put together an amazing tutorial for how to make a leather brooch for crafty blog Mollie Makes. The pin decoration is adorable and a perfect way to jazz up bland sweaters and winter coats. Be sure to check out our selection faux leather available here at MJTrends.

  1. Gather your materials, which includes colorful patches of leather, a pair of scissors, a leather hole punch, fabric glue, matching thread, a leather needle, about 6 centimeters of 3 mm ribbon, four star sequins and a brooch back.
  2. Take your leather fabric and cut out the shapes using the provided template.
  3. Then, you’ll want to use the hole punch to create a clean scalloped edge.
  4. Glue the white scalloped piece on top of the blue leather. The blue color should show through the lace holes in the frame shape. Use the red colored thread to sew a stitch around the inner edge.
  5. Next, take the red ribbon and glue to the suede side of the mittens.
  6. Create a loop with the mittens and center them in the middle of the circle, then glue into place.
  7. Use the white thread to stitch all around the edges. You can use this time to add subtle details like snowflakes onto the mittens.
  8. Next, use the gold thread to sew on the gold star sequins to the background for added effect.
  9. Take the red leather oval piece and stitch on the brooch backing.
  10. For the last step, glue the front and back pieces together, and you’re all set.
  11. Use the white thread to stitch along the edge for a finishing touch.

The final result is charming, the perfect handmade gift for a special someone this season. Share a little holiday cheer and get inspired to craft a faux leather brooch or ornament piece this winter.

I appreciate that the materials list is so specific, down to the 6 centimeters of ribbon and 3 mm width, it makes it easier to replicate without guessing.

The use of a brooch back on a red leather oval is a smart way to keep the structure sturdy while still matching the overall design.

This would make a thoughtful handmade gift, especially since you can customize the colors of the leather patches and thread easily.

It’s clever to use gold thread with the star sequins, that small detail probably adds a lot of sparkle without overwhelming the design.
