A graduate of De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) won a recent competition with a series of latex and lace designs. The competition was sponsored by ASOS, and the Contour Fashion graduate, Elissa Grainger was chosen out of a competition featuring over 600 brands.

Her brand called Elissa Poppy has garnered tons of followers on Instagram, and there’s a bright future ahead for the budding star. The judges from the ASOS Fashion Discover competition included representatives from the British Fashion Council, i-D and Graduate Fashion week.

One stand out piece includes a bright red lace corset, complete with latex ribbing and lace up ribbon detailing. Other key pieces include a black lace lingerie set, including delicate latex bows and an attachable lace mask. For a retro feel, Elissa created a polka dot latex look which featured subtle hints of lace on the bodice and briefs, along with black latex trim.

The 22-year-old designer said, “My inspiration for the brand comes from many different places, including the artwork of Roy Lichtenstein which is really brought out in different products that I have.” In addition to her cash prize, she also will receive mentoring from each of the judges, and her designs will be featured in ASOS 2017 Spring/Summer collection.

She will also receive a grant to assist with cost of living and a shared office space in The Innovation Centre. In the future, Elissa has said that she would love to style stars like Rihanna and Beyonce. Based on these gorgeous latex and lace designs, we’re bound to see more from Elissa Grainger soon.

Getting mentoring plus a shared space at The Innovation Centre seems just as valuable as the cash prize. That kind of support can really help turn Elissa Poppy into a long-term brand.

That red lace corset with the latex ribbing sounded incredible, especially with the ribbon lacing detail. It’s cool to see someone mix such structured materials with something so delicate and romantic.

Styling Rihanna or Beyoncé actually makes sense given how bold these pieces sound. The bright red corset alone feels like something that would stand out on stage or in a music video.

Taylor Quinn

I like how the polka dot latex look nods to Roy Lichtenstein without being too literal. The subtle lace on the bodice and briefs keeps it playful instead of costume-like.

The attachable lace mask paired with a black lace set feels very editorial and a bit theatrical. You can really see why ASOS would want that kind of statement piece in a collection.

Winning against 600 brands is no joke, especially with judges from the British Fashion Council and i-D. The combination of latex bows on a lace set feels like a fresh twist on classic lingerie.

Jamie Brooks

It’s interesting that her inspiration comes from pop art, because latex already has that bold, graphic feel. Mixing that with lace softens it in a way that feels wearable but still striking.
