How to add spikes to leather

Energize your wardrobe by adding studs and spikes to well-loved outfit staples. YouTuber MorellaReborn created an easy do it yourself project that’s simple and fun. Grab a pair of scissors, some gift cards and spikes or studs. For this tutorial, she used a special tool to attach the spikes to her jacket, but you can also manually do it by hand as well.

  1. She started by using a silver sharpie to mark where she wanted to place the studs on the black leather fabric. Alternatively, you can use another color of marker depending on the color of your own fabric.
  2. She used a tool to adhere the studs in place, similar to a staple gun. You can also attach the studs or spikes by directly screwing them into the fabric.
  3. To help make the process easier, she used some expired gift cards to create a small plastic holder for the stud. This is an easy way to keep the stud or spike in place, so it won’t move around by accident.

The end result is oh so chic! MorellaReborn added a few spikes to the shoulders of her leather jacket. You can always adhere spikes and studs to many other wardrobe staples, like vests, shorts and jeans.

If you have some left over studs and spikes, try adding them to a handbag, a pair of plain shoes, or even on the sides of a sweater for a cool look. If you’re feeling bored with your current wardrobe lineup, mix things up by adding some punk-inspired studs and spikes.

I like the tip about using an expired gift card as a holder while screwing in the spikes, that seems way easier than juggling tiny hardware on soft leather. The silver sharpie marking trick is smart too.

Never thought about marking placement with a silver sharpie first, but that makes a lot of sense on black leather to keep everything even. The staple gun-like tool sounds convenient, though I’d probably try the manual method.

Adding spikes just to the shoulders like MorellaReborn did feels like a nice balance between edgy and wearable. I also appreciate the suggestion to use leftovers on shoes or a handbag instead of wasting them.
