New York Comic Con is October 8–11 — twenty days. Halloween is Friday, October 31. Photograph the costume at home, in light you control, before you walk into Javits. Con-floor lighting is overhead, mixed, and unkind to shine. The photo you want is not the one you get between panels.

Why shoot it before the con
You see seams, wrinkles, and color the way they actually are. You have a record of the make. You are not fighting a dealer-hall fluorescent while someone walks through the frame. Shoot it finished, standing, sitting, and turning. If a crease looks like a crime after you sit, that is a fabric problem — 2-way holding a line versus 4-way that sits — not a photography problem. Fix it on the table, not on 11th Avenue.
The mistakes that wreck shine
On-camera flash. A small light on the lens turns patent vinyl and latex into a white hole. You lose the garment. You keep a specular blob. Move the light off the camera, or do not use flash at all.
Overhead fluorescents. Ceiling grids put a hard stripe down every gloss panel. The costume looks cheaper than it is. Turn them off if you can. If you cannot, stand next to a window and kill the overheads in that room.
Shooting latex before you shine it. Matte latex photographs like a tire. Shine it, then shoot. The bottle belongs in the repair kit for the con; the first coat belongs on the table at home.
What works: a window, 45 degrees off the costume, overcast or north light if you have it. A white wall or a sheet as bounce on the shadow side. Phone cameras are fine. Distance is not. Step back so the shine is a plane, not a hotspot the size of a quarter.
Lustre lycra — liquid sheen, no vinyl bounce
Black lustre lycra is on sale, $9.99 to $6.99. White is on sale at the same price. It sews like spandex because it is spandex. The face reads wet in a photograph without patent’s mirror. If the character is shine and you already sew knits, this is the finish that still looks expensive in a window, not only under a strobe. Pair it with a custom-fit pattern the same day as the fabric.
Patent vinyl — a mirror. Light it like one.
Patent is thicker than 2-way PVC and does not want to sit like leggings. It holds a line. It also reflects whatever is in front of it — a window, a lamp, your phone. Latex — shine it, then shoot it
Latex is rubber. There is no knit backing. You glue seams; you do not sew them. Black .20mm is the honest starting roll, $9.99, full price. .50mm black is $17.99 if the garment needs the extra weight. Unshined latex looks dull in the same window that makes lustre look expensive.
4-way stretch PVC — it sits, then it has to photograph
Purple 4-way is on sale, $13.99 to $9.99. Shoot standing, then sitting, then standing again. If the crease does not come out, that is the fabric telling the truth. 4-way will sit. Patent and 2-way will hold a line. Do not photograph only the standing pose and call the build finished. Pair it with a fitted pattern — Leg Day Legging — not a chart size. One-size costumes fail at the first fitting, and they fail again in the photos.
What not to do
Do not wait for the con floor to find out the flash wrecked the shine. Do not buy latex because the reference photo was latex if you sew, not glue. Do not start a first catsuit this late. Order the fabric this week. Order the custom-fit pattern the same day. Photograph it at home, then pack the repair kit. Twenty days is a lighting window. It is not a first glued catsuit.
