Donna Karen Steps Down at DKI

BY admin on July 13, 2015

The fashion industry’s been abuzz with the latest scoop, Donna Karan has officially stepped down at her signature brand, Donna Karan International. For many American women, Donna Karan has become an icon, a quintessential part of the fashion world since the eighties. In retrospect, let’s review some of her designs, featuring luxe leather jackets, chic faux leather skirts and exotic prints like snakeskin, over the years.

Karan’s career began at Anne Klein, where she transitioned from assistant designer to head of design. It wasn’t until she launched her own label in 1984, wih her husband Stephan Weiss and Takihyo, until she began to be recognized for her “Seven Easy Pieces” collection, made up of wearable jersey separates.

Fashion was different at the time, where wearing boxy suits with dramatic shoulderpads was the norm in corporate work environments for many women. Karan’s line was a breath of fresh air, offering a set of feminine pieces that were versatile and easy to incorporate into any wardrobe. In 1988, Karan launched “DKNY” which plucked stars like Demi Moore and Bruce Willis for advertising campaigns.

Donna Karan pieces are characterized by elegance with a soft touch of femininity. A wardrobe favorite, a classic leather motorcycle jacket, comes in Donna Karan’s signature touch. Whether you prefer a spicy red belted leather jacket or a smooth shade of camel with tons of sexy rivets, there is something for everyone with Donna Karan’s designs. She is renowned for her immaculate detailing and tailoring, along with her ability to seamlessly weave in leather panels into practically anything.

Chic and on trend, a pleated leather skirt is just the ticket for this upcoming fall. Celebs from Katie Holmes to Chrissy Teigen have been seen in Donna Karan designs, with Chrissy rocking a gorgeous two toned belted PVC studded dress at Donna Karan Pre-Fall 2015. Katie Holmes went for a glam look, tossing a leather motorcycle jacket over a leather top and sheer maxi skirt. Never afraid to accentuate the curves of a woman’s figure, Donna Karan nails a snakeskin skirt in a beautiful shade of cobalt. Although Donna Karan may be stepping down as the forefront of one of the nation’s leading womenswear brands, her legacy and influence will continue to inspire the fashion world.
