How to do pleats with veggie leather
A pleated skirt looks delicate and dainty, but when revamped with luxe black veggie leather? The results are totally on-trend and fresh. Fashion blogger behind KTR Style has created an easy to follow do it yourself tutorial on how to create pleats. After seeing a pleated leather skirt from Alice + Olivia with a $396 price tag, the blogger decided to create a more affordable option of her own.
- First, she assembled her materials, which included 1 yard of black faux leather fabric, a needle and thread, measuring tape, pins, an iron, and an old tee shirt. Visit her website for the full tutorial, including helpful diagrams and patterns to use.
- Cut out the fabric in several sections, with a four inch piece for the waist band and two separate 16 inch pieces to create the skirt.
- Take the two larger pieces and sew them together along the edge, this will be your base piece that you will begin to pleat.
- Next, start the process by folding the fabric over like an accordion. You’ll need to use the pins to secure each section in place. Work carefully, because pins can be very damaging to leather fabric.
- Try on the skirt and make sure it is a comfortable fit. If needed, you can cut off an extra fabric to avoid any unnecessary bulk.
- Use a sewing machine to sew about a half inch along the edges of the top. Work carefully and use a heavy duty needle to avoid any accidents or jams.
- The next step includes ironing, so be sure to make sure your iron is adjusted to the appropriate setting. Gently iron the fabric for only one to two seconds at a time, otherwise you might burn through the fabric completely. You can use an old t-shirt as a layer above the fabric to avoid any unnecessary damage to your skirt.
- For the waistband, you’ll want to fold it over in half and gently iron the cloth.
- Open it and fold it again so the leather is exposed. With a half inch seam allowance, sew the waistband together to keep it in place.
- The last step is to attach your zipper to the back.
The finished piece looks totally gorgeous and ultra glam. For styling ideas, try pairing the skirt with a studded belt and denim vest for an edgy look. Small hoops, pointed pumps and an oversized satchel create a totally effortless vibe. For colder seasons, pair with knit leggings or over the knee boots for a sultry look that’s winter-ready.
